History of the Association

The Music Teachers' Association of California (MTAC), incorporated in 1897, is a nonprofit professional organization of approximately 3,800 members, whose purposes are:
  • Promoting musical culture
  • The pursuit of excellence in the field of music education
There are sixty branches in the state, and each branch maintains its own schedule of programs and activities as well as participating in statewide projects.  Click here to see the state website: www.mtac.org.

Theory score: 80% and above
Memory requirement: 2 pieces memorized
Sight Reading: good or excellent
Technique: good or excellent
Performance: good or excellent
Minimum grade for piece selected: 5-
School grade: none
CM level: 4 and above
Time limit: 5 minutes for all disciplines
The evaluator selects the B.H. piece from among the memorized pieces.

Rules for MTAC-LB Sonata/Sonatina Competition 2009

Chairpersons: Willie Chen and Kazuko Yasukawa

Competition Date: Saturday May 16, 2009 all day
Entry Deadline: Saturday April 25, 2009 at 11:59 PM
Location: Seal Beach Center for Spiritual Living
Due to the nature of the competition, we are unable to accept time requests.
Winners must be present at the end of each program to receive awards.
Entry fee is $25 per person.  There is no teacher fee.
Please make one check out to MTAC-LB and mail to Willie Chen by the deadline.
All teachers who enter students are expected to help out.
Time limits for each division: elementary 7 minutes, intermediate 9 minutes, advanced 12 minutes.
